Faith and health partners praised for winter shelter that will house 140 people, speaker says

Reverend Emily Harkins told the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 6 that a coalition of the county, city, health systems and faith partners will provide emergency winter shelter for more than 140 people this season. Harkins said the county’s sharing of space at the Annex 2 building on Highland Avenue, county community grants, and support from the city of Winston‑Salem, Atrium Health, Church Partners, St. Timothy’s and New Story will allow volunteers and partner organizations to provide beds, meals and wraparound services nightly.
"Each night every person who walks through the doors will have a bed to sleep in, a blanket for warmth, a full night's rest and a good meal to sustain them," Harkins said. "Never in our city or county's recent history have we been able to provide care to this many people on a given night."
Harkins thanked the board for funding and for working across systems to create shelter capacity and said the effort demonstrates the community's ability to collaborate across government, health care and faith sectors. No board action was taken during the public comment; the remarks were recorded as public appreciation and description of an ongoing program.
