Summary
Organizers presented a schedule of speakers, telescope walks and family activities for the new Bluff Dark Sky Festival. Council approved a $1,000 allocation for promotion, advertising and modest travel offsets to support the event and the town’s dark‑sky outreach.
Organizers of a new Bluff Dark Sky Festival presented a day‑and‑a‑half schedule of speakers, workshops and telescope walks at the Nov. 4 council meeting and requested town assistance for advertising and limited travel costs. The council approved a $1,000 allocation by unanimous voice vote.
Festival organizers described a lineup that includes Kevin Schindler of Lowell Observatory as a Friday keynote and presentations on Navajo constellations by Drs. Nancy Maryboy and David Begay on Saturday. Activities target local families, regional visitors and potential out‑of‑town guests and include a portable planetarium, constellation tours with green lasers, telescope viewing (organizers said about a dozen to 14 telescopes are expected), and daytime workshops for children.
The request also noted the event supports Bluff’s Dark Sky designation and provides outreach materials the town can use in annual reporting. Organizers said most cash contributions to date have come from local business owners; the Bluff Community Foundation and San Juan County visitor services provided additional support in cash or in kind. Organizers asked for $500–$1,000; council approved $1,000.
Motion language recorded in the meeting was: "Motion to approve a thousand dollars for the Bluff Dark Sky Festival." The motion passed unanimously. Staff indicated some dark‑sky line items remain in the town budget and minimal educational funds are available for brochures and outreach.
