Board preview: honors geometry, precalculus and Raspberry Pi course to be brought forward for approval

Kelly Brent, math department supervisor, presented three curriculum items to the education committee: a revised honors geometry course aligned across middle and high school, a redesigned precalculus course focused on algebra and trigonometry skills needed for calculus, and a project‑based Raspberry Pi course offered through Harrisburg University for dual credit.

Brent said the honors-geometry revision ensures consistent rigor for students taking the course in middle school or high school and that teachers from both levels collaborated on learning goals and standards. On precalculus, Brent said calculus instructors helped define the algebra and trigonometry competencies that students must have before entering calculus so precalculus now emphasizes those skills more deliberately.

Raspberry Pi was described as a hands‑on, project‑based course taught by Robin Wolf in partnership with Harrisburg University; students may earn college credit and a math credit. Brent said the class enrolls students from across academic levels, is project based and does not rely on traditional tests.

Board members praised the department’s vertical alignment and rigor. Dr. Shane and other board members noted the benefit of consistent precalculus preparation for STEM pathways. Brent also accepted board members’ recognition of her pending retirement, and the committee thanked her for her service.

The committee did not vote on the curricula at this meeting; Brent said the three items will be presented for formal approval at the board meeting in two weeks.
