Maricopa County holds Veterans Day ceremony honoring county employee veterans

Maricopa County held a Veterans Day ceremony that recognized county employees who have served in the U.S. armed forces. County leaders said 1,064 county employees identify as veterans, reservists, or members of the National Guard, which they said is nearly 8% of the county workforce. The program included a flag presentation by the Maricopa County Sheriff—s Office Honor Guard and a performance of the national anthem by Sergeant Lenny Miller.

Chairman Thomas Galvin, of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, thanked veterans and their families for their service, said the county has been designated an Arizona veteran supportive employer by the Arizona Department of Veterans— Services and the Arizona Coalition for Military Families, and noted county offerings such as employment training, affordable housing and wellness services. Galvin also announced free admission to county parks for veterans on Tuesday, November 11.

Detective Robert Lopez of the Tempe Police Department, who also serves in Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 41, delivered keynote remarks reflecting on his military deployments, his transition to law enforcement, and lessons of service, family and faith. Lieutenant Ryan Neville of the Maricopa County Sheriff—s Office spoke about his family—s generations of service, his path from the Marine Corps into law enforcement, and the county—s support for veterans, including tuition reimbursement that he said helped him complete his undergraduate degree. Neville also described his leadership role in narcotics investigations that, as summarized during introductions, have resulted in large seizures of illegal drugs and weapons.

The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence for veterans and a presentation of tokens of appreciation from the county. The transcript of the event records no motions, votes, ordinances or other formal board actions.
