Blair County gets $15,000 Norfolk Southern grant to fund public-safety drone project

County commissioners read a letter from Norfolk Southern stating the award comes through the railroad’s Safety First program and is part of the company’s open-application grant programs launched in 2023. Mark Taylor, Blair County director of public safety, said the county drone project will “enhance and coordinate among local agencies, reduce response time, improving emergency response, safety, and strengthening the overall community.”
County officials said the grant will help the drone project improve public safety and community response capabilities. The commissioners did not provide a detailed budget for how the $15,000 will be spent during the Nov. 6 meeting.
The grant was announced during commissioners’ comments and did not require a separate vote; it was presented as an informational item to the board.
