Chief Stamborski told the council engineers theorized that rebar damage and repeated loading over decades — vehicles are heavier now than when the building was constructed — led to the current condition. “It’s a safety issue and we would really appreciate the funding for it,” the chief said. He described temporary staging that has protected mechanics but noted that the work must proceed to restore full safe use of the bay and to return a recently purchased lift to service.
Councilors asked about the construction timeline and temporary displacement of apparatus. The chief estimated the full repair project could take “probably 2 to 3 months” for the physical work after design and bidding are complete, and described temporary reassignments of ambulances and specialized trucks to other stations while the mechanics’ bay is stabilized.
The appropriation was approved by roll call (11–0). The mayor said funding would come from stabilization for capital budgeting. The public safety and equipment availability impacts were a central rationale for moving forward immediately.
