The Taunton Municipal Council on Monday approved temporary amendments to the Helping Hand Fund to provide short‑term relief if federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits or fuel‑assistance payments are paused. The amendments, requested by the chief financial officer, authorize the purchase of grocery store gift cards and the provision of fuel assistance for an initial 30‑day period and are set to expire on Nov. 30, 2025.
The chief financial officer read a communication advising that SNAP was scheduled to pause funding on Nov. 1, 2025, and that a pause of fuel assistance is possible, creating potential hardship for residents who rely on these federal programs. The communication requested the temporary amendments to ensure the city "can lawfully provide temporary support to affected families and our community partners during this period." The council moved and seconded the request and approved the measures by voice vote.
In other routine business the council accepted a retirement notice from the City of Taunton Retirement Board for Sean R. Sylvia of the Taunton Police Department, effective Dec. 18, 2025, with 32 years and four months of credited service; approved a one‑day bingo request submitted by Taunton Revitalization Inc.; and approved an hours‑of‑operation renewal for Redshift Donuts Inc. doing business as Dunkin' Donuts at 5 Washington St.
Councilor Sanders also moved to refer a public‑input letter from Jen Elsinger (dated Oct. 21, 2025) and additional letters to the committee on public health and environmental affairs; the motion carried. Clerk and staff said copies of relevant meeting recordings and the city bylaws would be made available to requestors.
The council adjourned after completing the agenda.
