Taunton officials present multi-year capital improvement progress; highlight roads, roofs, fire station repairs and solar projects

City public-works and administrative officials on Oct. 14 presented a multi-year update on Taunton's capital improvement program (CIP), reviewing accomplishments from CIPs 1— and priorities carried forward into CIP 5.

Presenters detailed investments that included road resurfacing and drainage work, replacement of boilers and roofs in municipal buildings and schools, three apparatus-bay floor replacements in fire stations, sidewalk and ADA improvements, water and wastewater main work and solar installations at municipal facilities. Officials noted engineering and compliance work at the water treatment plant (including lead-service inventory work required by state regulation) and updated the council on the Coyle building rehabilitation (roof, elevator, boiler, sprinkler work and parking-lot improvements).

DPW and capital-project staff said the city purchased equipment such as a Vactor truck and a flail mower that enabled in-house work and cost savings. The presentation included recent and planned bridge designs (Old Colony Street and Plain Street), and the administration highlighted a sludge-field solar project anticipated to become one of the largest municipal solar fields in the city.

Officials said the city's recent CIP spending has followed a balanced approach across building, roads and enterprise funds and noted that in 2024 Taunton led a group of comparable municipalities in capital reinvestment per city reporting. The administration said the CIP process is ongoing and that detailed CIP materials and the presentation will be posted online for review.
