Taunton public property committee hears abutter's interest in small city parcel on East Whitehall Street

John Paul Thomas, owner of the abutting property at 88 Whale Street, told the Committee on Public Property on Oct. 14 he is interested in purchasing a small city-owned parcel (parcel ID 65-423) on East Whitehall Street to reduce overgrowth and maintain the land adjacent to his business. Thomas said there are no other immediately abutting residential properties and that maintenance by his company would be easier than city maintenance.
Committee members asked administrative staff to check whether the city had considered combining the parcel with nearby redevelopment parcels (including an adjacent property on Oak Street) because the Cob Brook corridor runs through the area and stormwater considerations might affect redevelopment plans. Members also identified a possible "paper" roadway and wetlands on the parcel and asked the applicant to note that environmental constraints could affect future use.
The committee unanimously voted to ask the law department to draft the appropriate procedural steps and a timeline for the potential sale or transfer of the parcel and to return the matter to the committee when that information is available. The applicant said he expected to use the parcel for maintenance and cleanup only.
