Mayor Pro Tem Vanessa Fuentes presented a proclamation Nov. 6 recognizing the Austin Alumna Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., citing more than 111 years of scholarship, service and civic engagement in Austin.

The proclamation, read by Fuentes, notes that "11/26/2025 marks the 115th anniversary of the Austin Alumna Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated" and praises the chapter for scholarship initiatives, youth mentoring, and community partnerships. "The legacy of the Austin Alumna Chapter is woven into the fabric of this city and surrounding communities," Fuentes said as she read the proclamation.

Renee Jones, president of the Austin Alumna Chapter, accepted the proclamation and thanked the council and chapter members, naming co-chairs Avis Gibson and Sarah Melinda Murphy and noting the chapter's membership. Jones said the recognition was an honor for the chapter and its service to the Austin community.

The ceremonial proclamation recognizes the chapter's anniversary and public-service record but does not create any new city policy or funding.
