The Milwaukee County Board on Nov. 6 approved two related actions aimed at food insecurity during the federal government shutdown.
The board adopted a resolution authorizing a $150,000 transfer from county contingency funds to the Department of Health and Human Services for emergency supplemental food assistance, a measure recommended for adoption by the finance committee and approved on the floor by roll call (18 ayes, 0 noes). The resolution was sponsored by a large group of supervisors and was described as a short-term response to mitigate SNAP reductions.
The board also adopted a resolution declaring food apartheid a public health emergency in Milwaukee County and directing county action to address food insecurity stemming from the federal shutdown. That measure passed 17–1 after unanimous-consent cosponsor additions and brief roll-call voting.
Clerk records show the appropriation transfer (item 15, file 25-704) and the declaration (item 16, file 25-705) were both recommended for adoption at finance and were carried on the floor after no substantive debate. The board recorded the adoption of the transfer 18–0 and the declaration 17–1.
