Mark, Ivins Parks and Recreation director, updated the council on recent programs, volunteer efforts and capital purchases. He said youth sports registrations and community events such as Heritage Days had good participation and that trail counters were installed on Highway 91 and Snow Canyon Drive to measure pedestrian and bicycle use.
Mark said the counters distinguish pedestrians from bicyclists and report directionality, and that the city participates in a regional active-transportation dashboard. He described ongoing and upcoming activities, including bus trips to Las Vegas on Nov. 18, basketball registration through Nov. 14, Santa in the Park on Dec. 3 and Wreaths Across America in December.
On capital items, Mark said staff will interview seven candidates to fill two new parks positions and that the city had ordered two replacement trucks and a used boom lift to support tree work and seasonal lighting.
He described a proposed ADA-compliant swing set and shade structure that fits an existing Unity Park aesthetic and would include multiple swing bays with fall-rated surfacing; the selected bid was “under the budgeted amount, just barely,” he said, and staff will bring a purchase request to the council.
Council members asked about fabric shade durability in high-wind conditions; Mark said existing shade fabric has lasted five years with acceptable performance. He also asked residents to notify staff with questions ahead of the consent agenda vote.
