Ward Melville recognizes 18 commended students and five National Merit semifinalists

Mr. Polonia, the high school principal, introduced the recognition and read the names of 18 seniors recognized as National Merit Scholarship commended students and five students named semifinalists. The district said commended students scored among the top roughly 50,000 PSAT performers nationally, placing them in the top about 1.5 percent of graduating seniors; semifinalists represent approximately the top 0.5 percent and advance in the scholarship competition with additional application requirements.
Polonia called students forward in alphabetical order to accept certificates and then posed for group photos. The transcript lists the commended students as Isabella DeVito, Kevin Dong, Natalie Drucker, Maria Gavrilov, Alexander Jambinski, Ben Hayes, Grace Hammonds, Anbang Jiang, Molly Karp, Matthew Lam, Andy Lou, Abby Abigail Meshey, Olivia Miller, Rishakesh Ram, Yumeng Su, Andrew Xi, Anna Shing and Brian (Bridal) Jang (attendance not confirmed in the meeting for one student). The semifinalists read aloud were Ted Lee (not present), Julian Mower, Michael Retack, Tina Shing and Eric Jong.
The board honored both groups with certificates and photographs; no formal action was required for the recognition.
