Ariana Green, principal transportation planner with the Transportation Agency for Monterey County, said the campaign aims to bring awareness to traffic‑safety issues across the county and to pilot methods to promote long‑term behavior change. She said the agency wants community‑driven steering committees to lead the local work and that the agency has funding to produce initial campaign materials. “We'd like to try a process where we form a community steering committee, and really let the community lead and develop the campaign,” Green said.
Council members asked whether the community‑led process could help document Safe Routes to School corridors and support future grant applications. Green said the process would primarily focus on messaging and outreach but would also create opportunities for community members to identify infrastructure needs that could be documented for grant applications.
Council members requested staff follow up with the agency and asked Green to return with a written proposal for a future meeting if Pacific Grove agrees to explore piloting the campaign.
No formal action was taken at the meeting; staff will coordinate with the Transportation Agency for Monterey County if the city elects to pursue a pilot program.
