Parents and students press PWCS to add boys high school volleyball amid rapid growth

Two speakers during the citizens' comment period urged the board to add boys high school volleyball as a sanctioned sport in Prince William County.
"Boys high school volleyball is the fastest growing sport for boys across the nation," said retired Navy Master Chief Ronnie Servone, who spoke to the board about access and equity. He told the board that club volleyball can be expensive and that school sponsorship would lower cost barriers and increase collegiate opportunities. "Let's provide new athletic opportunities to our kids in PWCS," he said.
Roman Servone, 15 and a sophomore at Colgan High School, told the board he has played volleyball since age 11 and that he and other students at his club are seeking more school-based opportunities. "I made a petition that I got 250 signatures in 2 weeks to have boys volleyball be added to Prince William County as a sanctioned sport," Roman said, and urged the board to expand access beyond club-affiliated players.
Speakers asked the board to consider Title IX implications and suggested complementary girls' athletic opportunities if boys volleyball is added. Board members did not take immediate action during the public comment period; the matter may be raised again for staff analysis or future agenda consideration.
