Referendum projects on schedule after Traeger traffic plan rejected; district to widen driveway and hold listening sessions

Oshkosh — The district’s referendum projects remain on schedule but a traffic‑safety element tied to Traeger was rejected by the Common Council, district staff told the school board on Nov. 5.
District administrator Mr. Yerke said the district and city transportation committee completed a traffic study and solicited local feedback before including a proposal for a traffic signal, a right‑turn lane and flashing beacons in referendum plans. City council members later voted the measure down after city staff and councilors determined the traffic counts did not yet justify signal installation.
As an interim response, Yerke said the district will reconfigure the Traeger driveway to a four‑lane approach (separate left‑ and right‑turn lanes) and align the driveway with the local business across the street so that, if traffic volumes later meet city thresholds, a signal could be installed without additional alignment changes.
Yerke also announced neighborhood design/listening sessions to review the project plans and gather public input: Franklin on Nov. 20 and Oakwood on Dec. 2 (both at 6 p.m.). City planning staff, Bray & Associates and district facilities and referendum staff will be present, he said.
Other referendum notes: the facilities team visited Maplewood Middle School (a recently completed new building) for design ideas; the North Auditorium design process was launching with site visits scheduled to Sun Prairie’s new auditorium.
Board and public questions addressed pedestrian crossing improvements and flashing beacons placed near the YMCA crossing to the west of Traeger. Mr. Yerke said the city will be responsible for signal installation if future counts justify it; district work on the driveway is intended to make the site ready for that outcome.
The board did not take formal action on the Traeger design at this meeting; staff said public comments gathered at the listening sessions will be posted and used to refine plans before construction bidding.
