The City Commission on Nov. 5 accepted a Military Affairs Board recommendation to rename Leon Park as Veterans Memorial Park and acknowledged the Art Advisory Board's recommendation that an art piece be installed at the park when funds become available.
Commissioners described the action as honoring the city's veterans and noted that the park's prior name had historic ties the commission said were no longer current. Vice Mayor Ivan Chavez Jr. and other speakers underscored the city's veterans legacy and asked staff to work with the veterans board on commemorative details.
The resolution, added to the agenda earlier in the meeting, passed by voice vote without recorded opposition. Staff will work with the military affairs and art advisory boards to identify location specifics and to plan for an eventual art installation when funding is secured.
