Lieutenant Pedro Arcia took the oath of office and was sworn in as police major for the West Miami Police Department during the Nov. 5 City Commission meeting.
Chief of Police Pedro Delgado introduced Arcia's career history and led the oath, telling attendees Arcia joined the department in 2003 and later served on a DEA task force that brought in significant forfeiture funds supporting departmental work. "You've earned it every step of the way, and I know you'll continue to lead with integrity and pride," Chief Delgado said while administering the oath.
Arcia accepted the oath and thanked the commission, the chief and his family. "This city is really special to me... I look forward to continuing and working with the city and making it a better place," he said.
Several commissioners and visiting public-safety officials offered congratulatory remarks and cited Arcia as an example of local career advancement. Commissioners praised the department's stability and community knowledge and noted Arcia's recent move into an administrative role.
The ceremony included a series of short tributes from elected officials and outside colleagues. No council vote was required; the swearing-in was a ceremonial appointment and administrative action.
