The district reported official Oct. 1 enrollment of 18,003, a decline of 334 students (1.8%) from the prior year. Pre-K and kindergarten rose; first grade fell sharply; high school grades 9—12 are down 214 students overall.
Waterbury Public Schools reported official Oct. 1 enrollment numbers to the board on Nov. 6 showing a net decline of 334 students districtwide, a 1.8% drop from the previous year.
"Overall in the district, we're down 334 students," Mr. Albini told the board, noting a shift from 18,006 to 18,003 in the headline figures. He highlighted a 10.5% increase in prekindergarten (up 93 students) and a 10.8% increase in kindergarten (up 120), contrasted with a sharp decline of 302 students in first grade (about 21%). At the high-school level, grades 9—12 were down 214 students overall, a roughly 4% decline.
Albini pointed to significant school-level and grade-level variation: some elementary schools and magnet programs reported enrollment gains while others saw declines. He said the administration would distribute the numerical tables to commissioners for review.
Board members asked questions about specific schools and program capacity, in particular the Career Academy and Waterbury Arts Magnet, which showed enrollment gains; commissioners also discussed planning thresholds and capacity concerns if patterns continue.
The report did not propose immediate programmatic changes; staff said the detailed tables and comparisons would be shared and that the numbers will inform planning, staffing and resource allocation decisions.
