Planning Commission approves zoning change recommendation for internally illuminated canopy signs; ordinance to come before council

Planning Commission member Miss Straub reported to council that the commission met on Oct. 23 and voted unanimously to approve an amendment to the zoning ordinance requested by Francesco Benacasa. The change would permit internally illuminated canopy signs in the C-1 and C-2 zoning districts.
Miss Straub said the commission had originally voted to deny the request but later reconsidered and supported the amendment; she cautioned council that a few planning commission members still had reservations about the change. The zoning amendment will be placed on a future Lexington City Council agenda for formal consideration and possible adoption.
No ordinance language or additional conditions were provided in the presentation to council; staff will circulate the planning commission minutes and the text of the proposed ordinance in advance of the council hearing.
