First public hearing on Dawson County FY2026 proposed budget ends with no speakers; staff cites $127,525 net reduction

The Dawson County Board of Commissioners opened the first of three public hearings on the FY2026 proposed budget during its Nov. 6 work session and recorded several staff-proposed adjustments to the draft budget.
Chairman noted this was the first hearing and that the board will hold two additional hearings (one later that day at 6 p.m. and a final hearing at the Nov. 20 voting session when the board could adopt a 2026 budget). Staff summarized line-item changes provided by Tiffany, including a correction to the sheriff's office shift-differential coding that added $104,000 to the sheriff's requested amount, an inmate medical contract increase of $35,000 based on an updated contract, a $35,000 increase for the med-pay program driven by full implementation in 2024, a transit reduction of $51,525 attributable to grant coverage of the transit manager position, and a $250,000 decrease to salary contingency based on staffing trends. Staff said the net impact of the changes is an approximate net reduction of $127,525 to the FY2026 proposed budget.
The chairman opened the public hearing and asked for speakers; no one from the public spoke and the hearing was closed. Staff reminded the public of the remaining hearings and the Nov. 20 voting session timeline.
