Board debates name for new Apollo-area athletic facility; decision tabled to December

The board discussed naming the new multipurpose athletic facility to be built near Apollo High School and ultimately tabled the decision to the first board meeting in December 2025.
Justin Scalarude, Apollo High School principal and representative of the naming committee, outlined the committee process and presented three recommended names: "Apex Athletics Complex," "Apex 742 Athletic Training Facility" and "ACT Athletic Center." Scalarude said the committee of parents, staff, community members and students met three times and recommended option one. He also described the facility: "On April 8, voters approved the building of a $15,000,000 multipurpose athletic facility for Apollo Tech, Crush and community use," designed to include indoor turf, batting cages and golf simulators.
Board members debated whether a short, brandable name ("Apex") would be more searchable and recognizable versus including the district number (742) to "honor the voters" who paid for the facility or adding "Saint Cloud" to identify location. Several board members supported a shorter name with district branding integrated into exterior signage and interior logos; others wanted "742" included to tie the facility to the district and the voter-approved bond. Graphic/logo mock-ups and exterior signage options were discussed as a way to reconcile those goals.
A motion to table the naming decision to the first meeting in December was made and seconded; the board agreed to defer final naming until design options and logo mock-ups can be prepared for further consideration.
The board instructed staff to return with design mock-ups that show variants with and without "742" and with potential Saint Cloud/Area Schools branding. No final name was selected at the Nov. 5 meeting.
