Summary
A North Bend resident told the council he was surprised to find about 25 acres in an MDNS and master-plan materials proposed for National Guard use near Truck Town and expressed environmental and safety concerns. He urged residents to submit comments before the MDNS deadline and attend a Nov. 13 hearing.
Michael Thomas told the Nov. 4 City Council meeting he was "stunned" to find language in the master plan and MDNS indicating about 25 acres near Truck Town could be used by the National Guard. Thomas said he supported appropriate commercial development in the area but objected to locating a National Guard facility next to residential neighborhoods, a truck stop and nearby schools.
"I have grave concerns — environmental — around the area, the national guard, convoys, the school, military vehicle pollution," Thomas said, and cited an interbay project military relocation report that, he said, references convoys and a CH-47 helicopter-compatible landing pad. He urged residents to watch the MDNS public-comment deadline on Nov. 10 and the Nov. 13 hearing and to send comments to the city council and Snoqualmie Valley School District.
Thomas asked the public to pay attention to what he called "Project 34," which he said was discussed at a Sept. 23 work study and that may involve relocating the truck stop and siting a National Guard facility nearby. He said he hoped citizens would weigh in for or against the proposal at the upcoming hearings.
