City launches national recruitment for community development director; outside firm retained

Fond du Lac has begun an external recruitment for a new community development director, City Attorney and Human Resources Director Miss Hoffman told the City Council on Oct. 22. The city contracted Innovative Public Advisors to conduct outreach, vet candidates and assist with interviews.
Hoffman said the firm's profile is posted on the city website and that all city department directors will participate in the interview process. "No one will replace you, Diane, but we will endeavor to get along without you," Hoffman said, addressing outgoing director Lisa Benson. Hoffman said the estimated cost for the outside search is about $9,000 and that the amount will be covered by HR contingency funds.
Council members asked whether elected officials would take part in interviews; Hoffman and other staff explained that department-head recruitments typically involve internal department leadership and the hiring official rather than city council members, and that statutory processes differ for positions such as police or fire chief.
Benson and staff said they plan to fill or finalize other vacancies in the department (planner position expected to be filled in coming weeks) so that a new director will inherit an operationally staffed unit.
