City Manager Gunderson outlined a plan to relocate and reconfigure the customer service area at city hall so that visitors entering near the elevator would be greeted at a single service desk. The plan would remove two interior walls in the current clerk's office, expand the front desk, and add a small meeting room to provide on-site tax assistance and other services.
Gunderson said the work could be completed largely by city service department staff; the primary external cost would be furniture. He estimated the furniture and associated fit-out at between $20,000 and $25,000 if new items are purchased, and said staff would draw the money from an economic development line item with budgeted but unused funds.
Councilmembers asked questions about the design and whether the desk would be open or behind glass; Gunderson said the design would be an open doorway and that employees would still work behind the desk with two staff present during peak times. No formal action was taken on the proposal during the meeting; the item was presented for alignment and further consideration.
