Hiram cancels New Years Eve block party, moves fireworks to tree lighting amid sponsorship shortfall

The Hiram City Council voted to cancel this years New Years Eve block party and transfer the fireworks to the citys Christmas tree lighting, after an extended discussion about attendance, vendor commitments and sponsorship shortfalls.
"New Year's Eve is showing 88 interested with 8 going," Melissa, a city staff member, told the council when summarizing social media interest for the event. Council members and staff said vendor commitments were limited, sponsorship outreach started late and the event had become a strain on hotel/motel tax reserves.
Council members described multiple reasons for the decision: low confirmed attendance, only one (or two) vendor commitments, and concerns about staff working late hours between the tree lighting and a separate New Years event. One council member said staff told them the city was roughly $3,500 short of sponsorship commitments needed to proceed as originally planned.
"We've only got one sponsor and two vendors committed," a council member said; another noted staff already moved past budgeted funds for earlier events and suggested cancelling the event this year and revisiting planning, sponsorship and marketing for next year.
Council members proposed alternatives including moving the fireworks to the tree lighting, staging smaller events through the year, a stronger sponsorship and marketing push next year, and potentially reallocating funds from planned equipment purchases to cover gaps. A motion to cancel the New Years Eve block party and move the fireworks to the Christmas tree lighting was made, seconded and carried.
Staff said the fireworks vendor requires a permit for the launch site and that organizers could seek to obtain required permits for an approved location; they also said one sponsor had agreed to move its sponsorship to the tree-lighting if the New Years event was canceled.
Council asked staff to pursue better planning for future years, including earlier sponsor outreach and clearer event timelines to avoid excessive staff hours. Staff also flagged that hotel/motel tax funds were being drawn down to cover event costs and that smaller events through the year might yield a higher return on investment for community engagement.
The council directed staff to coordinate fireworks timing and permitting and to report back with logistics for the tree-lighting display.
