Town staff described the recent renovation of restrooms at Jason Lopez Moreno Park, a Capital Improvement Program project that included Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) updates and replacement of damaged fixtures.
The presenter said the project began as a planned CIP renovation to address ADA compliance and replace fixtures that had reached end of life. Vandalism reported last year had left toilets, sinks and dispensers broken, with graffiti and other destruction to the facilities.
"We had some graffiti and destroyed porcelain," the presenter said, describing the before condition. The town installed more vandal-resistant materials, including stainless-steel fixtures where appropriate, and completed cleanup and repairs.
During council questions, Police Chief Thomas said the principal suspect in the vandalism turned 18 and the case was referred to adult court. "That person currently has a warrant and is on the road," Chief Thomas said, adding that while charges were filed quickly, suspects have not yet been taken into custody.
Council members praised the rapid coordination among police, facilities and contractors to investigate and repair the facility. One council member asked staff to consider additional detection-capable cameras or other sensors to alert the town to suspicious activity in public facilities.
No council action was required beyond the informational presentation, though council members asked staff to report back on any additional security measures considered for the park.
