Tom Bannon, a representative of Community Hospital Anderson, told the South Madison Community School Corporation Board of Trustees on Nov. 6 that this year's Community Chefs fundraiser raised $112,000. "As long as you have a high school as part of it, could be public or private," Bannon said, describing how proceeds are distributed. "Half of what we raise each year goes to the school systems based on enrollment."
Bannon said the hospital's share for South Madison this year was $13,236. "This year, we raised $112,000 that night. So as I mentioned, half the proceeds go to the schools. So that means I have a check this year for South Madison Schools for $13,236," he said. He also said the total given to South Madison since the program started is $131,971.
District leaders told the board how the funds are used. President Ward explained that the money "goes to our nurses" for supplies and that the district distributes the funds by building based on enrollment. The board did not propose a policy change or reallocation during the meeting; the check presentation and explanation of current practice comprised the item.
Bannon thanked school staff and community partners, including the Kiwanis Club, which he said has supported the event. No formal action was required or taken by the board at the time of the presentation.
The donation follows the district's budget and allocation practice described at the meeting: monies from Community Chefs support nurse supplies and are apportioned to buildings by enrollment.
