Resident Benjamin Lozada told the Santa Fe Springs City Council that frequent, prolonged train horn use at the Los Nietos and Norwalk crossing is causing headaches and hearing concerns for people who live and work nearby.
"They are really loud. Some of the conductors hold on to the horn really loud, and it's just causing a lot of headaches and, like, ear damage," Lozada said, describing his work proximity to the crossing.
Council/staff response noted that federal law requires horns at public crossings but said the city is pursuing a long‑term grade separation (an underpass) for that location that would eliminate the crossing and remove the need for horns. City staff offered to contact the railroad company to ask whether operational adjustments or interim mitigations are possible and encouraged the resident to also contact Congresswoman Linda Sánchez, whose office can help with federal coordination.
No action was taken at the meeting beyond the offer to have city public works staff reach out to the railroad and pursue constituent assistance from the congressional office.
