Venetia High's all-female Forestry Challenge team wins regional competition; advances to state championship

Venetia High School's Forestry Challenge team was honored during the Benicia Unified School District meeting after winning its regional competition by more than 20 points, Principal Klein Schmidt told trustees.
The extracurricular competition trains students in natural-resources techniques, field measurement, species identification and real-world case study work. Emily Hudson, the team's teacher advisor, described the two-day contest format that includes a 15-minute presentation built from field data and a site assessment; the Venetia team's project this year focused on a post-fire forest-health assessment at Butana State Park.
The principal and students highlighted that the eight-member team was all female, praised the students' collaboration during an intense two-day timeline, and confirmed the group will advance to the state championship in El Dorado Hills in April. Students said the extracurricular activity exposed them to potential career paths in forestry and natural-resources management and required fieldwork and group presentation skills.
Trustees congratulated the team during the meeting. The district noted the activity is extracurricular and not graded as part of regular coursework.
