On second reading the board adopted revisions to policies GLCE and GLCER to provide school nurses with 30 minutes of unencumbered time during the workday, in response to state proviso 1.191. Administration said the change stems from the state requirement and was presented to the board at first reading on Oct. 21.
Dr. Goodwin and staff clarified the intent and coverage plan: providing unencumbered time does not leave health rooms unattended because backup staff and multiple emergency backups exist in each school. "Business will continue as usual, but they'll get a most deserved respite," a staff member said. The board moved to accept the policy revision; the motion was seconded and the chair called for the ayes. The motion carried.
Administration said implementation will include existing plans for backup coverage and that districts are following the state-defined proviso. No implementation date beyond standard policy timelines was specified in the public discussion.
