Board preview: proposed 2026–27 academic calendar starts after Labor Day, ends K–12 in June

Superintendent Julie Nielsen presented a proposed 2026–27 academic calendar to the board at the Nov. 6 workshop. The steering committee that drafted the calendar includes cabinet members, department representatives, union representation and building principals.
Key dates in the proposed calendar: first full day for students Sept. 9 (after-Labor Day start), a first-trimester end on Dec. 3 (followed by a teacher workshop day Dec. 4), a condensed winter break with students in session Dec. 22 and school resuming Jan. 5, spring break March 15–19, and the last K–12 day June 9. Nielsen said the calendar was developed to satisfy state seat-time requirements and contract duty days (current teacher contract requires 183 duty days). The district also must end the school year by June 30 per state guidance.
Board members raised concerns about the first trimester ending after Thanksgiving, noting the benefits of having finals and a longer break over Thanksgiving week for students. Nielsen said the steering committee weighed options and that community feedback generally favored an after-Labor Day start; she said the calendar will be brought back at the next business meeting for final approval.
Nielsen asked board members for any edits and said the district will publish the final calendar once approved. The proposed calendar will be included in school and district communications for families once finalized.
