Lansing — The Michigan House adopted House Resolution 213 on Nov. 6 commemorating the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. Representative Roth delivered a detailed remembrance of the vessel’s launch, notable Great Lakes incidents, and the November storm in 1975 that resulted in the loss of the ship and its crew.
Roth recounted the Fitzgerald’s 1958 launch in River Rouge, its role as a Great Lakes freighter, and the harrowing weather conditions on Nov. 10, 1975, including waves exceeding 18 feet and winds above 60 mph. He referenced the ship’s final radio contacts and the continuing mystery surrounding the loss, and asked that copies of the resolution be sent to the Great Lakes Maritime Museum, Mariners' Church of Detroit, and the museum ship Valley Camp. "As we remember the Edmund Fitzgerald, let us honor the courage of those who sailed her," Roth said. (Representative Roth, first referenced at 02:24:57)
