Monroe County proclaims November 2025 as Operation Green Light for Veterans; veterans officer outlines events, state food aid

The Monroe County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 6 proclaimed November 2025 as Operation Green Light for Veterans and encouraged residents and businesses to display green lights in recognition of veterans transitioning from active duty.

The proclamation, read aloud by the meeting’s presiding commissioner, cited data on service‑member transitions, mental‑health stress during the transition period and large federal disability and compensation benefit programs. It states counties should salute and support veterans and urges community recognition during the month.

Stephen Miller, Monroe County Veterans Service Officer, thanked the board and laid out a schedule of Veterans Day events, saying, "If it's okay with you, I was planning to tell you about the Veterans Day events that we have coming up as well as operation emergency food from the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs." He listed events including a Veterans Day luncheon at Meadowood, an early‑morning coffee with veterans at Starbucks and an IU flag‑raising, a breakfast at the Center for Veteran and Military Students, an American Legion program and a county employee appreciation event on Nov. 12.

Miller also described Operation Emergency Food, a program of the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs that can provide one‑time grants to replace SNAP benefits for eligible veterans. He said the grant amount counts against a $2,500 per‑individual maximum for the program and that, according to IDVA, checks can be processed in as few as 72 hours.

The board confirmed the courthouse will be lit green for the coming week in recognition of the proclamation and related youth events.
