Commission hears staffing, recruit graduations and fire-station timeline; approves budget report and monthly bills

The Green Bay Police and Fire Commission received operational updates from department leadership and approved two routine financial actions during its Nov. 6 meeting.

Fire chief reported the recruit class graduating tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the NWTC Auditorium, and said the city received council authority to over‑hire by two positions to cover anticipated retirements. The chief said demolition at the new fire station site is complete, development-team meetings are ongoing and the project will go to an ad hoc facilities committee and back to council; construction start was described as likely in 2026 or 2027 with an estimated 18‑month build.

Police Chief Steve Davis reported sworn staffing of 172 of 190 positions, with 154 fully deployable; some officers are on military leave, injured or in field training. He said the department will hire six people on Monday, including three in‑state lateral hires.

On finance items, the commission received and placed on file the budget status report and spreadsheet after discussion. The chair explained that lease costs were "about 50 over" (phrase used in the meeting transcript) and that fire recruiting is about half of its allocated budget while medical expenses are over budget due to the second hiring authorized earlier this year. The commission also authorized payment of monthly bills related to police advertising and candidate site charges.

The commission confirmed closed‑session personnel outcomes on returning to open session, then adjourned.
