Carbondale organizers push Spanish outreach, translation and a WhatsApp channel to boost Latino participation

Carbondale community organizers spent much of their meeting discussing how to improve Spanish-language access to city events and committees, formalize outreach goals for 2026, and expand a WhatsApp resource channel for residents.

Members said translation at city and partner events is often inconsistent, which discourages Spanish-speaking residents from attending and participating. They proposed several steps: request department-level presentations tailored for a Spanish-speaking audience, recruit and compensate small facilitator groups to reach neighbors, and prioritize two or three large community events next year for concentrated outreach rather than spreading limited resources across every event.
