Hurricane officials say quarantined dog to face euthanasia review after child seriously injured

Hurricane City staff updated the council on Nov. 3 about a recent dog-bite incident at Zion's Gate that left a 5-year-old child with serious facial injuries.
Staff said the dog was quarantined for the required 10-day observation period under the care of a licensed veterinarian. After the veterinarian reported concern about the dog’s behavior and asked city staff to pick it up, the city impounded the animal and served the owner a notice of intent to euthanize the dog due to prior biting incidents. The owner has 15 days to file an appeal; if no appeal is filed, staff indicated the city will proceed with the action.
The police/animal-control official described the child’s injuries as substantial: the child developed a fever, sustained fractures to the jaw and has an infection; further surgeries may be required. Staff praised a 13-year-old girl who witnessed the incident and reportedly hit the dog on the head to force it to release the child, noting that her actions may have prevented worse harm.
Council members asked procedural questions about impoundment and appeal timelines; staff described outreach to the owner and confirmed the steps being followed under local animal-control procedures.
