Mayor Karen Bass announced Nov. 7 that she has selected Jamie Moore, a 30-year LAFD firefighter and current Valley Bureau commander, to lead the Los Angeles Fire Department. According to an announcement included in the Council’s morning program materials, Moore commands five battalions, 39 fire stations and nearly 1,000 personnel in the Valley Bureau.
The mayor’s office said Moore will advance an agenda to strengthen response to major emergencies, prepare for forthcoming world events and improve 911 response citywide. The announcement stated that Moore, if confirmed by the Los Angeles City Council, would be the second Latino to lead the LAFD and the first Spanish‑speaking fire chief.
Why it matters: The fire chief sets department priorities for response, staffing and major-event readiness across the city; confirmation will require Council action. Public safety partners and City Hall staff will be watching any confirmation process for changes to emergency operations and 911 performance targets.
What the Council did: The mayor made the nominee public in advance of any required Council confirmation; no confirmation vote was held during the Nov. 7 session.
Who spoke or was referenced: Mayor Karen Bass (announcement); nominee Jamie Moore referenced in the mayor’s statement.
