Under the draft language shown to trustees, a principal could suspend a student up to five days; suspensions beyond five and up to 10 days would involve the principal and superintendent. For suspensions greater than 10 days and up to 45 days, the proposal would authorize the superintendent, board president and two additional executive‑committee members (for example vice president plus one of secretary/treasurer) to extend a suspension. Suspensions between 46 and 60 days would require full‑board action; suspensions beyond 60 days would be handled as expulsions.
Board members discussed scenarios where additional time is needed to arrange assessments, threat‑assessments or behavioral evaluations and the effect on student re‑entry timing (for instance, summer or semester transitions). Trustees asked staff to review ripple effects for parent/ student experience and to consider whether additional safeguards or timelines should be added. No formal vote was taken; the board indicated it will further consider the proposal at the November meeting.
