Page County engineer reports road repairs, winter prep and approves fiber utility permit

King said crews are replacing field‑entrance bridges with twin pipes and completing repairs to culverts and a damaged bridge on D Avenue. “We’ve been replacing field entrance bridges with pipes over the last several years,” King said, describing the work as preventative to maintain farmer access and protect structures.
Pavement work and vegetation control: King said the pavement crew is doing two passes on several county pavement segments to reduce vegetation that traps snow and that a skid‑steer crew is mowing brush on J 64. He reported personnel attended winter‑maintenance training in Atlantic and that the department will shift some operations from road maintenance to tree cutting as winter approaches.
Wind‑farm haul route patching: King told the board that J 52 between the county line and F Avenue — the designated haul route for wind‑farm contractors — will receive extensive pavement patching before winter. He said the county requested quotes from patching contractors and that the wind‑farm contractor has been notified and will be affected. King told supervisors the contractor will pay for the second iteration of patching on that route.
Fleet and equipment: King said several vehicles were sent to Omaha for work that exceeds current shop capabilities; newer trucks have more computerized systems. A truck purchased last year is awaiting a service body installation and parts are delayed at the chassis supplier.
Utility permit and broadband routing: King presented a utility map showing the Midam fiber route segments that cross Page County; the permit package covers portions of four counties. A board member moved to approve the utility permit for Olson Consulting Engineers; the chair called the question and indicated approval.
Speakers cited routine implementation tasks and logistics; supervisors asked follow‑up questions about vehicle repairs and about burn piles that could affect drifting snow. No new staff hires or budget amendments were approved during the update.
The engineer said more rock placement for gravel roads will be scheduled in spring to avoid winter loss, and that the county will set a dollar amount and timing with contractors for that work.
