Newton County approves $1.3M bridge repair contract, Henderson Mill widening and developer bond

Newton County commissioners on Nov. 4 approved several transportation and infrastructure items: a $1.3 million contract for maintenance on eight bridges funded roughly 75% by a GDOT grant, a road-widening project on Henderson Mill Road with a low bid of $565,000 from Pittman, and a cash-security bond to allow developer Doms Road LLC to begin work on Crowell Road.
Public works director Chester Clay presented the Messana contract for bridge repair and said the county will re-advertise phase 1 where only one bid was received earlier. On Henderson Mill Road, Clay said lanes are currently about 10 feet each (20 feet total) and that the county proposes widening two feet on each side and adding striping; he said the road has experienced approximately 157 crashes in 12 years, including two fatalities, and that 107 of those were single-vehicle run-off-road crashes. Commissioner Wong asked for assurance that adequate shoulders would be provided; Clay said contractors will add fill to the grass shoulder to create usable width.
The board also approved a bond agreement with Doms Road LLC to allow the developer to proceed under a cash-security bond. All three items were approved by voice vote following motions.
