District reports growth in GATE identification and launches AI pilot in classrooms

A staff member from Educational Services told the Lawndale Elementary School District board that the district's revised GATE identification process has significantly increased the number of identified students and that the district is piloting classroom AI tools in a limited cohort.
"When we first started with the updated identification process, we introduced that in 2023, we had 115 students identified. Two years later, today, that number has grown to 271," the staff member said, describing the most significant increases at the middle-school level. The updated process supplements universal screening (Naglieri in third grade) with SBAC performance, teacher recommendations and additional factors such as English-learner status, foster youth status or low-income status to broaden access to GATE eligibility.
On classroom technology and policy, the staff member said the district previously published three resources on responsible AI use (AI guiding principles, teacher AI guidelines, and student technology and AI guidelines) and is now piloting a cohort of teachers using Magic School AI to evaluate instructional value, assessment support, and safety and privacy considerations. District offerings include asynchronous professional learning modules and an "introduction to AI" unit in digital citizenship lessons.
The board asked for confirmation that ParentSquare outreach metrics are high; staff said community liaisons monitor contact lists and reported a 98—99% success rate for communications on the ParentSquare dashboard. The AI and GATE updates were informational; no formal policy changes or rollouts were approved at the meeting.
Staff said additional information, including pilot findings and parent resources, will be shared via ParentSquare and future board updates.
