Sheriff Mark Danels responded to public reaction after an unnamed commander was cited in a crosswalk accident, urging restraint and adherence to due process while also stressing local traffic-safety concerns.
Danels said the incident occurred during the commander 27s personal time and called it an accident, not an intentional act: "Accidents are not intended events. If you intend to hit somebody, that is a crime." He said the commander was cited by another agency, went to court and was found not responsible. Danels said online suggestions of a "good old boy" system were unfounded and encouraged anyone with evidence of judicial misconduct to report it for investigation.
Separately, Danels used a recent traffic stop of an Uber driver who failed to stop at a stop sign as an example in his weekly safety segment. "Traffic control devices like stop signs, yield signs ... they are a mandate that you have to stop," he said, and warned that failures to stop were contributing to accidents, including a recent crosswalk injury.
Danels urged drivers to obey traffic-control devices and to avoid amplifying unverified accusations on social media.
