County announces food-collection boxes and SNAP resource guidance; commissioner issues road-safety warning after deer collision

Mahoning County staff told the Board of Commissioners on Nov. 6 that the county has placed two nonperishable food-collection boxes in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank and urged residents to consult United Way’s website for SNAP and other resource listings ahead of the holidays.
“I know there’s a lot of questions and some changes that have happened with SNAP benefits, and the holidays are coming up,” Megan (county staff) said. She said collection boxes are located in the courthouse rotunda upstairs and in the lobby of the administration building next door.
Why it matters: county staff framed the drive as part of preparations for the Thanksgiving period and encouraged donations and use of consolidated resource listings to help residents in need.
Public-safety reminder: a commissioner described a recent collision with a deer on Youngstown Collin Road and stressed caution at dusk and dawn. The commissioner said emergency responders found deer antlers near the scene and that vehicle damage was substantial, using the anecdote to urge drivers to be vigilant on county roads.
Other announcements: commissioners congratulated recently elected local officials and confirmed the next commissioners meeting for Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Jackson Township Administrative Building at 10 a.m. The meeting adjourned thereafter.
