School committee backs plan to re‑establish curriculum subcommittee; vote on membership set for Nov. 19

Milton — School Committee members on Nov. 5 supported creating a curriculum and instruction subcommittee that would meet as needed to review program‑of‑studies, literacy pilots and other curricular items before those items come to the full committee.

Superintendent John described the proposed subcommittee as a preview body similar to an earlier advisory committee that had been paused in recent years. He said the subcommittee would allow two or three members of the school committee to meet with district curriculum staff, ask operational and timeline questions, and provide a vetted recommendation before matters are presented to the full committee. "So when it got to the table, at least half of the school committee was part of the process," he said.

Members said the subcommittee should be small and that, if formed, it should meet in a timely way ahead of major curricular votes. Chair Serio and other members recommended asking for expressions of interest and scheduling a membership vote on Nov. 19 so the subcommittee can convene in advance of program‑of‑studies work and the February literacy update.

Why it matters: The subcommittee would create regular, smaller‑group opportunities for committee members to engage with curriculum staff, provide community voice earlier in development and reduce surprises at full‑committee meetings.

Next steps: Committee members who are interested in serving will notify staff; the committee will vote to appoint subcommittee members at the Nov. 19 meeting.
