Dawsonville DDA discusses facade grant options from peer cities, tables program for further review

The Downtown Development Authority discussed a proposed facade grant program during its Nov. 6 meeting, reviewing examples from Milledgeville, Dahlonega, Greensboro and Clarksville and considering program design elements including matching requirements and maximum award amounts.
Amanda Edmonson, DDA director, presented the examples and said some peer programs set maximum awards of about $1,000 to $5,000 and commonly require a match; she suggested reviewing the documents and combining the best features for Dawsonville. Board members discussed whether the existing Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) grant should be folded into a DDA-administered program or whether both should remain in place. Some members favored a program that acts as a percentage match (for example, 50% up to a specified cap) while others noted the local HPC grant has a lower maximum and is not used frequently.
After discussion the board voted to table the item until Jan. 26, 2026 to allow members to review the examples, identify preferred provisions and return with proposed criteria. The motion to table was made by Tasha Howell, seconded by Jonathan Campbell, and recorded in the transcript as "Motion carries."
