A resident concerned about bicyclist safety asked the Clayton City Council to add signage and road markings on Haber Road, citing narrow shoulders and a lack of safe routes for students accessing the high school.
The speaker identified himself as Earl Harlemer, "parts director," and said he had written to council previously to request cycling and road-share markings on Haber Road. He said Haber Road is the only reasonable access for cyclists from the Sweet Potato Ridge area and that the lack of shoulder makes cycling risky. "We don't turn any kid away," Harlemer said of an upcoming Breakfast with Santa event, and he urged the city to consider signage for motorists to be aware of bicyclists.
Council members thanked Harlemer and said they had discussed the matter with the service supervisor, Randy, who indicated that signage was "definitely a doable thing." Council noted that speed limits on National Road (a state route) are controlled by the state and cannot be changed by the city, but signage on local approaches and targeted markings were presented as feasible near the school to improve cyclist visibility and safety.
Council asked staff to keep the request in front of the service supervisor and to consider potential sign locations and costs; no formal ordinance or funding action was requested at the meeting.
