District staff reported Nov. 3 that the forestry grant work is at a near-start position: the engineering contract recommended by the grant committee is expected to be signed by the end of the week and grant administrators (Rio Grande International Study Centers) are managing the contracting process.
Velasquez said no on-site work has begun but curriculum work and teacher training preparations have been completed; trainers who initially had planned to travel to the district will instead provide training in Laredo. Staff said they are monitoring contract signature and will coordinate the start of building and teaching components once the contract is executed.
Velasquez said he has met frequently with the grant administrators and receives regular text updates on contracting progress; trustees requested that staff provide notice when the contractor mobilizes to the sites.
