SafeCycle 1 funds limited; district to prioritize fencing projects including Sigaroa High School

LAREDO ISD trustees discussed fencing projects eligible under the SafeCycle 1 grant at the Nov. 3 meeting. Doctor Alfredo Gustavo Perez said procurement has been completed for multiple fencing proposals, but total cost exceeds available funding: proposals exceed $600,000 while the district has about $300,000 available for fencing under this cycle.
Perez proposed using the funds to complete fencing at Sigaroa High School (which had not previously received SafeCycle 1 funds) and then to select elementaries the board wishes to prioritize; his administration offered combinations that could include McDonald and Gallego elementaries or other pairings depending on board preference. Trustees also discussed prioritizing elementaries where fencing would have the greatest student-safety impact.
Trustees asked whether motorized gate hardware could be included; staff and procurement representatives said motorized gate motors are not an allowable expense under Cycle 1 funds. Perez said additional security-related items such as silent panic alert technology and window film have been budgeted separately and he recommended preserving funds for those projects.
Trustees asked staff to return with an administrative recommendation on which projects to fund within the $300,000 limit.
