Residents urged the commission to accelerate pedestrian-safety fixes on State Road 590 where it meets 7th Street South and to address a blind spot that residents say endangers children and bicyclists.
Sean McCann of 731 14th Avenue South described strong pedestrian activity and said he has asked for a crosswalk and other improvements at the 14th Avenue South intersection with SR-590 (between McMullen Booth and the downtown area). "There's a lot of pedestrian activity, at that intersection. It is sort of a dangerous intersection where, a crosswalk would be beneficial," McCann said, citing three accidents in 2024 according to Pinellas County data.
Louise Grabenowski described a separate but related safety problem at 7th Street South and 590, where overgrown vegetation creates a blind spot and a school bus that stops in the narrow roadway causes cars to queue and drivers to drive around obstacles. She urged the city to trim the vegetation at the corner and to require buses to use the school driveway rather than stop in the public street.
Staff response: City staff said this segment is on the state highway system and that the city has been working with the state; the last update indicated the state had moved the crosswalk design through its design and budgeting phase and the city engineer would follow up with the state.
What happens next: Staff said they will have the city engineer contact FDOT to check the status of the crosswalk design and will evaluate minor, city-controlled actions (e.g., trimming vegetation, signage) and coordinate enforcement or routing options for the school bus with the school and county.
